Smooth Style Lindy: Counterbalance, Stretch, Delay
John Lozano and Irene Lok
Who is this class for? Students should feel comfortable with basic lindy hop moves, including swingout, open basic, Lindy circle, tuck turn, and side passes. Questions? Ask at [email protected].
What will I learn? This series will focus on how to introduce counterbalance, stretches, and delays -- fundamental elements of Smooth Style movement -- to your Lindy Hop. Classes will also explore some classic Smooth Style Lindy moves like counterbalance starter steps, sugar pushes, whip, quick stop, switches, etc. You will also learn our core components of Lindy Hop moves in a framework that will give you freedom to create and expand your vocabulary. See the Facebook event for week-by-week descriptions.
With nearly 25 years of dancing and teaching Lindy and Blues, John Lozano has danced his way across the globe. He got his start in Detroit, and lived in Cleveland and Northern California before making Seattle his home in 2010. Once dubbed “Liquid Lindy,” he’s known for his connection and creativity on the dance floor, as well as his ability to make everything look smooth. As a teacher, he brings playfulness and humor to each class.
Irene Lok found swing dance in Los Angeles and immediately got hooked by the social aspect of the dance. While “Smooth” or “LA Style” Lindy remains her specialty, learning Seattle's totally different style gave her extra perspective on Lindy Hop as a whole. She looks forward to sharing her experiences and insights with you.
Performance Troupe Rehearsals (Mondays 7:30 to 10 p.m.)
• Location: Seattle Center Armory, 4th floor, Studio G.
• Cost: Free!
Come check out the club's own performance troupe! We encourage dancers to watch or participate in a rehearsal and learn how we work. Troupe members receive free instruction and training, and can eventually perform at Folklife, Dancing til Dusk, and all kinds of gigs around town. If you have stage fright, though, don't let that stop you. You can join troupe rehearsals as an understudy even if you never want to perform. Questions? Reach out to [email protected].
Practice Space (Tuesdays 8:30 to 10:30 p.m.)
• Location: Lowdown Ballroom (628 11th Ave E, Seattle, WA 98102; look for a house with a small sign)
• Cost: Free for members, $5 for nonmembers
The Savoy Practice Space is open at the Lowdown Ballroom every Tuesday evening starting at 8:30 p.m. Maybe you want to practice your Shim Sham or get a handle on the swingout.
